( Forward from Camp Wandawega director Tereasa Surratt ):
We’ve been fans of Chris Brown and Refueled magazine for many years - so it was an honor to have him join us as our first artist-in-residence.

Chris has worked with so many American heritage outdoor brands that we love - from Filson to Stetson - and tapped by it seems every inspiration source from TEDx to Netflix. His body of creative projects are so fast, and so good, it’s humbling. Finally getting to meet him in person was intimidating to say the least. What he has created - this world of meticulously curated beauty and craft - from where we sit, looks a lot like paradise. But what we learned pretty quickly is that he not only is one of the most humble guys you’ll ever meet- he’s also incredibly generous with his time. Over a campfire whiskey he talked about his process, which really resonated with me.

“A creative starts at the bottom of a circle, gains experience and moves through an education of their craft. It’s when you move beyond that and start going back down the circle, forgetting everything you’ve learned, that you come back to a place where you’re trusting your instincts and your unconscious voice.”

Our extended Wandawega creative community welcomed the chance to get to spend time with him as well. We found quickly that he’s a kindred spirit - a curator of culture, art and community. It’s easy to connect with Chris. He is so curious, driven and kind. His residency with us was less than a week, but the stamp he left will be here long after we’regone. The artwork that he made for camp SURF now takes pride of place right at the front door of our artist cabin. There was an empty wall - a white space that felt like it was waiting for the right person, the right piece, the right time. It’s timely and timeless - much like Chris.
